Thanks so sharing your thoughts, Roger. There are certainly MANY models for mission sending and support, all of which should be firmly dependent on God's direction and blessing, where through "human" organizations or one's one employment. I think it is important to remind ourselves that, throughout history, God often works through suprprising and new models.

I have been allowed to minister to the Brazilian people sine 2002, on and off, and I have never been in the position of being funded by, or sent by, any organizations. Funding has never been an issue because my wife and myself work and then take those resources and invest them into missions. This hasn't been easy but it is an example of how God can provide outside of men's organizations and still accomplish His plans and purposes. It has helped me to understand, for my life, that God is my source and if I am walking in obedience to His plans He will provide a way. Over the course of my life I have come to understand that God always provides and it never comes in the way that I expect. One comment about cultural understanding, it is very important but unfortunately it takes time and a few bumps along the way. I was told by a Brazilian Pastor that if I was going to minister in Brazil that I needed to understand the people and the churches there. He was right and it has been a tremendous help. I am currently working with a pastor in Icoaraci, Brasil that is building a missions training center that will also address cross cultural training in the hopes of making the transition easier and more productive. I think that you make a valid point about investing in buildings and I am seeing the wisdom in investing in individual lives that can then be sent out to minister to others to advance the Kingdom which is the direction of our ministry. If it will bring any encouragement to you, I have been seeing God move in many new directions out of the conventional mind set of what many have considered to be traditional or established missions.
