About

Tim and Marta are missionary teachers in several theological institutions in Brazil. They are on assignment to the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil. Tim’s key responsibilities include missionary research and writing, consulting in mission, and teaching in several graduate programs. Marta translates and assists PCUSA congregations in their short term mission trips to Brazil. In their leisure, Tim, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, enjoys longboard surfing and Marta, a native of Campinas, São Paulo, in Brazil, enjoys music. The purpose of this blog is to offer resources for greater engagement in mission and stimulation of discussion. Enjoy!

Tim,
My name is John Rogers and I am the associate minister for campus ministry and outreach at University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill, NC. We have had several members of UPC that have asked about the church’s work in Brazil and in my initial search I came across you and your family. I am interested in finding out more about areas of need in Brazil and eventually be able to assess how we at UPC might identify a place where we can be of some assistance. I have a connection here in Chapel Hill with two sisters who run a restaurant in my neighborhood and are from Brazil. We are really in the beginning phases of our exploration into a new world for us. Our church is very active in supporting work in Haiti, the Middle East, and in parts of Africa. It is important to us to have ears to hear where Christ is calling us to be his servants in mission and missional support. If you can contact me with some helpful advice I would greatly appreciate your help. Hope you and your family are well.
Grace and Peace,
John Rogers
Hi John:
Thanks for your recent note on our website. I would be delighted to assist however we can as UPC considers possible ministry in Brazil. My wife, Marta, particularly works with PCUSA churches who come to visit or work in various ministries in Brazil through our partner, the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil. There are a number of larger ongoing mission projects that this denomination has that you might be interested in: in the Northeast drylands, along the Amazon River, and in the southern Gaucho region. Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte is exploring a connection with the Gaucho project and tentatively planning to visit that area next year. Perhaps a few of your church members could piggyback on that trip, or if you have a larger group another trip could be planned. That is usually a “first” step, a visit to the area with acquaintance of national church leaders (to get the big picture) and church leaders in the specific area. Marta and I will be in Charlotte during January and February 2010 and then again for another 6 months as of late 2011. Perhaps we could schedule a visit. We are available on the 14th and 21st of February and during the week sometime during January or February we have even more time. Also, if you will be in the Charlotte area perhaps we can meet.
You may have already done so, but a description of our ministry can be found at a number of webpages listed at http://www.timcarriker.com.
Please free free to pursue this further.
Yours in Christ…
